When the Roman Empiree invaded Egypt, they actually took every treasure or monument they could get and sent it to decorate the streets of Rome. What's more, there are actually more obelisks in Rome than in Egypt.

An obelisk is also a phallic symbol, and the particular one in the vatican also functions as a calendar. Because of its height, the shadow falls on particular brass discs on the pavement on particular days only once. The answer above about the pagan relationship is also valid. Most 'Christ-ian' holidays are borrowed from the Pagan. Solstice in winter became Christmas, Easter comes from Estrus, (eggs/fertility) Oestrus some spell it., and is set by the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal (spring) equinox. It is the only holiday in Christianity at least fixed by the calendars and the moon cycles. Calendars were VERY powerful magic, and he who had the calendar and the knowlege to use it held power.
Hope it helps...
Rome is full of obelisks from all over the world! Apparently moving monsterous stones, from Egypt even, was no big deal!

The obelisk in Saint Peter's Square was brought to Rome by the conquering Romans. It was in the area where the Christians were martyred and then brought to its present location. So it is really there to remember the Christian martyrs.

If you recall Christmas is celebrated on the winter solstice, and was originally the celebration of "birth of the sun god"... Christians took it and changed it to "birth of the son of god", and the stolen obelisk is a symbolic reminder of that other theft.

4 it conceals the entrance to the underground 'pope cave'
5 it is very heavy, and requires too much effort to move

It is one of the spoils of roman victory in Egypt. It was stolen, which if memory serves contradicts one of the ten commandments. I love irony.
