My Shih Tzu is 7 months old and the lady I bought him from wants to possibly breed her blue female with him (he's honey colored). I know its natural instinct for male dogs to know what to do when they encounter a female in heat, but is he too young to breed just yet??

There is no relation between the two dogs--however is the rule true that you can breed father to daughter but not mother to son?

Waiting until he is 1 year is best. Before that he may act like he knows what he is doing, but will likely be shooting blanks..Also, the 'tie' may really freak him out and both cold be injured..

Breeding father to daughter and mother to son equals about the same chance of defective pups..that's just an old wives' tale.

You do need to be aware though, that once he has been used at stud, he is likely to become a different dog, and develop the indoor marking, restless behaviors, humping and sniffing, aggressive to other males, running away at any opportunity, and other unsettling male behaviors..
Unless you bought him only for profit, he will be a much better pet and companion if he is neutered before he matures....7 months is ideal..

He should be at least 2 years old before being used for breeding. Also he shouldn't be used until he has had & passed health testing (not just simple vet exams) and has been shown or evaluated (not just by you or the breeder) by at least 3 knowledgable breeders/judges to determine breed worthiness. If the breeder you got your dog from is a responsible/ethical breeder she/he would know this all already. If she/he does anything less then they aren't a responsible breeder.

No, you can't/shouldn't breed father/daughter or mother/son. The relationship either way is too close and is inbreeding not linebreeding.

Sounds like more backyard breeding crap. Unless you know what in the heck you are doing, you do NOT breed parents to offspring, or sibling to sibling. That is done for a VERY SPECIFIC reason!!!!!!!
Check on the health clearances needed for the breed and get to some shows and prove that the dog is a good example of the breed.

They should have at least hips and patellas cleared, otherwise you are just breeding crap to make cash. Not very respectable.

He is way to young, he needs to be at least a year. You should not breed those two shihtzu thats inbreeding. That cuases mutation, eating disorders, bone disfunction, bad skin, and they can become nasty, this can also hurt the mother.
Please dont breed anyways
there are thouasands of
homeless animals
that need you
animals are caught on
the streets and if no wants them
they live the rest of there helpless lives
in a cage untill the shelters
get to full and they are killed
there life was wasted

Go to www.google.com or whatever your favorite search engine is and look this up: shih tzu rescue.

You will find that there are hundreds and maybe thousands of poor dogs waiting in foster homes and being boarded at vet's offices or kennels and they are looking for someone to love them. Why add another litter to that?

It is never okay to breed a dog. There are 27 million unwanted pets turned into shelters each year and many are euthanized. Adopt a pet for free or very little and save a life.
