the only proper way paint an accoustic ceiling is with an airless sprayer. asbestos or not, never use a roller. first off, it will take you several more times the paint over an airless sprayer. and b, it will not come out good at all since the surface is uneven whether you use a heavy nap or not. just bite the bullet and either rent the sprayer or have a pro do it.

There should be little or no danger with using a roller.
Most acoustic ceilings are textured with styrofoam chips or pellets, which are harmless. Roll away.
If you ceiling had asbestos (the only way to know is if you were there when it was installed and read the texturing material ingredients, or if you had a sample tested by a certified lab), the danger would only be when asbestos flakes into very tiny particles and if you breathed those deeply into your lungs.
So if you absolutely know for sure that you have asbestos, then wear a tight fitting air mask, the kind that spray painters use, with 2 intake filters.
The majority of asbestos used in houses was for only a few applications: insulation wrapped around air ducts (attic, basement or crawlspace), used in asbestos-cement pipe for hot exhaust gas flue pipes (water heaters, furnaces) or or for underground sewer lines, or embedded as a filler in certain kinds of vinyl tiles. Asbestos has been outlawed for use in new residential buildings since the 1970's (forgot which year.)
If you want to be super safe, then use a sprayer to paint the ceiling - mask the walls and windows if you don't want them to be accidently painted. And use a spray painter's mask.

If you are rolling over the tiles you have nothing to worry about even if it is asbestos. Asbestos is a fibre and if you were to roll over it the paint would make it stick to either the ceiling or the roller thus decreasing the chance of making it airborne. If you are going to do this you should at a minimal have a particulate respirator. It is basically a cotton face maks. 3M makes one get model no. 8210

I would find someone to remove the asbestos ceiling tile.
In this day and age there is no reason to keep this material in your home.
However if you must paint it wear a respirator.

Not rec commended, health wise. Best to spray, if it absolutely must be painted. Remember to Always wear a mask and goggles when working with asbestos. Hope this helps you out.

Use an particularly fluffly curler, meant for deeply textured ceilings, yet hide each and every little thing, because of the fact the popcorn WILL come off. i think of i could quite no longer scrape it, way too messy. If it have been me, i could do away with it by protecting the ceiling with a clean one, and portray that one, it may certainly be alot much less paintings.

the only way asbestos is harmful is if inhale the dust. If you paint the tile with a respirator on you will have no problems.

I would suggest not touching it ...one false move....!!!
The shape of asbestos fibre, allows it to be breathed into the lungs, but unable to be breathed out again. The lungs later try to expel it as a foreign matter...a condition that cannot be cured....leading to eventual death!! Personally, I wouldn't even go into the room!!
May I suggest a Health & Safety assessment......
