Depending on the recipe or what you are making the answer is to counter the sugar with something...vinegar. Just a small amount usually works.

Just as 1/8th teaspoon of sugar will counteract the 'acid' or tartness in a vinegar and oil mix, I would try a few drops of vinegar in a sugar and what ever mix and see if that will counter the sugary taste, if too much. (I wouldnt do this in milk though, because it may sour the milk).

(This is only a supposition, as I know that the sugar will cut the tartness of the vinegar, so, applying the vinegar is only a conclusion as to the opposite).
