My grandpa didn't fight in WWII, but he helped build the submarines that were used.
I think the only way your grandfather could have fought for the North during the civil way is if he is a historical re-enactor.
But other than that, did you leave out a few "great, greats" before the word "grandfather" or something? Or are you just REALLY old? ;-)

My Father fought in WWII and was a paraplegic out of that conflict.
My siblings and I have service time (I am Retired Military) from Vietnam to the current conflicts.
My Grandparents immigrated to the US as Indentured Servants -- either as maids, Railroad Workers, or cooks. We do NOT have a long history in the US as a family.
The ONLY Way this story could be true is when the situation happened that these gentlemen, in their very late years of life, married once again and out of that marriage (to a very young girl) ended up with a child from that marriage. At that point, then that child had to marry older than the average, and have a child that would become you, but you, too, would be in your retirement years (as I am right now).

I suppose the claim about your grandfather could be true if he had a child after returning from the war and that child had you when he/she was a bit older, and you're kind of "up there."
My grandfather fought in WWII (lied about his age and enlisted at 17) and in Korea.

Mine fought in the Korean war.
Well, the Civil War ended in 1865, and if your grandpa joined up at say, 16, later into the war, say, 1864, and either he or your father had their child at a late age, then it's entirely plausible that your grandfather fought in the war.
(I don't know your age)
An example:
1864-1865: Grandfather fights in war age 16-17
1875: Has father/mother at age 27
1935: You were born, your father is age 50.

My grandfather on my Dad's side fought in WWII. My grandmother told me that he did at least 2 tours in Nazi Germany and helped liberate people from the death camps. My grandfather on my Mom's side was also in WWII, but I think he was stationed here in the States the whole time in Galveston. Dad was in the Vietnam War, but he stayed here too. Mom told me he did paperwork or something, so he didn't actually fight. All of them were in the Army.

My grandfather followed the D-day landing, driving a supply truck. His only war time fighting was from snipers who held up the supply line from time to time. I don't know what outfit he was attached to.
My Uncle was with the 2nd Marine Division in Korea, received 2 purple hearts. He said one time he was advancing up a hill against Red Chinese and thought he had pissed his pants, being so scared, and realized later that it was blood from a bullet wound.
Several Cousins in Vietnam war and one on the USS Constlellation during the Gulf War.
