We have an 8 month old X called Max.
Each day we walk him in the woods behind our house, The trouble is that he will only pee in the stream, what with winter (wet fur) ect.. We need help / advice on how to get him to 'go' in a more apropriate place in the woods.
Any tips on how to get him to do this please?
Thank you.

:) Funny..

Your dog has a mind of his own! Ok

What I can tell you is that if you live in a cold climate where the stream will freeze over he is goin to stop on hs own once that happens or it is cold enough to cause him discomfort.

You could try not allowing him near the stream when he potties...
you do not ay the type of dog he is

He may have a hard time urinating while on a leash if he s not used to it...

Also if he is using the stream he must be squating not lifting his leg.. Understand that some male dogs always squat and never lift the leg.

If you have a fenced area or a kennel area I would suggest putting him in there givng lots of water.LOTS and LOTS ...
He will have to pee... as he is not going to let his bladder burst...
He may have a fit and whine about it all once he has to go..but eventually he WILL go and it wont be in the stream.

He just has to get it into his head he can go other places.

If he is used to walking on a leash and peein then just tkae him elsewhere..
Let him whine and have his fit if he needs to.. rest assured he will go... eventually he has too!

You may have to be tough thats all... you are the boss the parent..

Your problem is not uncommon either... go to a city dog park and you will find the Unpopular pet who goes into the doggie pool and pees.... then look for the horrified owner cause there will be one and all the other dog owners who take ther dogs out of the water!...

Larger breeds more commonly do this than small ones for some reason...
I fall else fails... Call your VET,..amke sure there is not a medical reason...

Good Luck

Dogs are like humans in many ways. They all have their own habits when it comes to essential bodily functions. The only advice I can give you is to pick another walking route & keep him away from water. The theory being that if he can't go in the water he will have to go where other dogs do (like tree's etc!)

well... When I got my dog it just kept peeing on the newspaper not the grass areas. So I took the newspaper to the grass in my backyard... And after my dog did its buisness out there I rewarded her with a treat. I kept doing that for a while until she was used to peeing outside... And then I took away the newspaper and now she knows that she can pee outside.

I think that your dog will start to urinate in more appropriate places as he matures.

Adult dogs urinate to mark territory and to cover the scent of other dogs - he is still quite young but once his hormones kick in I'm sure he'll be urinating up the trees.

He isn't that unusual - I own a couple of b**ches that drink out of pools then urinate in them thus preventing any other dogs from drinking that water!

You could try pouring a bottle of water under him?

And slowly decrease the amount of water used until it's used to peeing on the solid ground.

Keep him away from water for a while and as soon as he does it on the ground make a fuss of him. If he is un-neutered he'll probably stop soon and start doing it on trees to mark his territory anyway!

buy a cat litter tray, put some water in it and put it in your garden, always in the same place, take him to it, after he gets used to using it put a few bits of grass in it, add larger amount of grass each week until it is completely filled with it, then take it away, he will use the lawn

Have you tried not going in the woods with him and try making him go in the yard. My dog did the same thing and he broke his habit.
