Crisco, is a brand name for Hydrogenated Soybean & Cottonseed (Vegetable) oil. Although it has 110 calories per Tablespoon, all from fat, it contains NO sodium, carbohydrates, protien or cholesterol. It does contain trans fats, saturated fats and both poly & monoUNsaturated fats.
Lard, is NOT Crisco. Lard is an animal fat produced from the fatty or otherwise unusable parts of pig carcasses, technically a waste product of pork production. It has been used for hundreds of years in baking and frying. Lard has typically been used as a replacement for butter, since it was easily affordable and readily available.
Lard, butter and Crisco can be used interchangeably, but there will be subtle differences in the finished product.
