My 7 year old dog, Buster has been acting kind of funny for the last couple weeks. His eyes looked a little strange, he was more sensitive to touch (would move his leg in the leg twitch thing with the slightest touch), etc. He seemed to be getting more perky about a week ago. Now last night, he seems to have stoppped coming when called, he won't eat, he had hypersalivation for a couple of hours, and he is very lethargic. He keeps wanting to go outside and won't even eat his treats. When you pay attention to him he shivers and stuff. What might be wrong with him?

Ok, so, I kept him home and comfortable all day saturday, by sat. night he started responding to treats and ate a little bit of dog food. Sunday he seems a little bit peppier and is back to a semblance of his old self. Should I still take him to the vet monday, or do you think he just had an upset stomach or something?

Sounds like he's really sick, it really could be alot of things, I doubt rabies! But just keep him as comfortable as you can until Monday when you can take him.
My dog went through the same thing but he was 14. Which was just old age and he had tumors and stuff like that, which made him very sensitive to touch. If his eyes look hazy or glazed over- that's cataracts(which means he's losing his vision), which could add to his disorientation. I would say just do the best you can with him until the Vet can do a good exam and tell you exactly what's up.
Good luck!

He is probably sick. Your vet hopefull can cure it.
When dogs get sick or don't feel well they assume they are going to die. When a dog feels like he may die he stops eatting and just wants to get outside to find a nice quiet spot to die alone. They like dieing alone in the nature. Your dog can not distinguish between sick and dying.
Dont' make him eat, keep him inside and not out of your site until you can get him to the doc.
It may be something easy to cure it is hard to say.
Example:
My dog years ago was getting very old. The gas man let him out of the yard and he took off looking for a place to die. Far from home in the bushes some place quiet. We tracked him by geting reports from people who saw him going further and further away not to cause us pain. Dogs are like that. They know when the time is near.

The dog needs to see a vet.Even if the vet office is closed they should have a vet on call or an emergency referal service.

That doesn't sound good. I suggest you take Buster to the vet: There are a number of things I can think of that might be wrong, but nothing I am sure enough to say.

Good luck!

buster really needs to go to the vet now. if he is a large dog he may have a twisted stomach. this comes from being active to soon after he has eaten. if he is bloated looking, get on the phone cause this needs attention asap. i saw this happen to many shelter dogs that are over active in their cages. and also to my friends rotti. if this is what it is and he is not taken to a vet in a timely matter you will surely lose your best friend. please let me now if you can how he makes out.

Yeah.. I think you should really take your dog to the Vet right now.. It seems like a pretty serious thing. hurry up and take it to the animal hospital! I'm sure theres an emergency pet hospital around!!

OMGosh girl...Can't you find a place to see him on the weekend? It sounds serious but, I am not a vet. If you have had your dog for 7 years you know something is wrong. I guess you have to determine if it's worth waiting.

sorry to hear about your dog, doesn't sound good. Where abouts do you live? I live in the niagara peninsula in ontario and we have an after hours emergency clinc. It doesn't sound like you should wait call your local humane society and maybe they could tell you if you have one in your area. good luck

has he had his rabbies shot?....be very careful, rabies has stages....an animal may start out very docile, but can turn aggressive in an instant...it is more common for a dog with rabbies to become aggressive also...
