Bound's hubby here:

Sir, I am surprised that you identify yourself as a "retired" Marine ... of all the Marines I know and have competed with, those that were retired really considered themselves as no longer on Active Duty! No offense, but were you disillusioned with your decision to serve your country? Please see below!

I am an educator, after having pursued my involvement with the Army. I joined because I felt an obligation to my country.

The students that I have had that joined the service, have all proudly joined because of personal convictions. Since 9/11, my students have enlisted because of their sense of duty to their country. Prior to 9/11, many of my students joined because of a sense of duty, and because of the economically depressed area where they lived, it gave them a chance to excell.

ETA: I did not intend to offend Arthur or anyone else. I had always been reprimanded when I referred to retired Marines as "Retired"! At no point did I intend to offend or inpugne Arthur's patriotism. This man served his country longer than many, and having been a career man, made many sacrifices for few that would care. I am not one of them. For any offense, my heart felt apologies.

I was enlisted in the air force. The reason i joined (i enlisted right after high school--which was a little over a year after September 11th--boy did that ever hit my piss-me-off button!) was because i wanted to go to college but my family didnt have the money. But the biggest, most important reason is because i love this country (not necessarily all the people IN it, but hey, youve gotta protect everyone, not just the ones you like) and i have an obligation (in my opinion) as an american to serve my country if i can. And thats how i feel about a lot of people. If you are healthy enough to enlist, and you dont know where you really want your life to go, then maybe you should try the military. I did and it showed me more options for my life than i would have known about had i been a civilian all my life. Now i realize that the military isnt for everyone, im not saying anyone who is healthy enough should join, no. But if you think you can handle it, why not do it? You get respect and you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that you just cant get anywhere else. Im sure you know that already though.

Education.

I want to be a doctor but I don't have the money to go through med school. I figured if I went into the army as a "Health Care Specialist" (68w) that would give me basic skills and when I get out I'll have saved my money and get a job to get the rest of the money.

Haven't worked out all the plans yet and not even sure if htat's the path I want to take. I'm not going to decide over night. This is over a few years...

First of all, thank you for your service. The reason that I want to join, is simply for serving my country. America is a great country, and I want to really give back to it what it has given me. I have so much respect for the service men and women, and I really want to be a part of that. Our military is truley some of the greatest human beings in this world.

Women like men in a uniform? (Just thought I'd throw that in - I'm too old, anyway.)
