We have a dog in our house right now that we believe belongs to a very disturbed person who has on numerous occasions had their animals removed by the police. I have no way of knowing for sure that this dog (a pure bred small breed) is theirs and if I ask I'm sure they would lie as they "collect" animals. They have been arrested numerous times on drug charges, etc as well. I would like to keep the dog, she's very sweet and has adapted well to my family. Our home is clean and comfortable, whereas this "suspect" house is full of animal waste and debris. I know that legally I would be on questionable ground, however morally I think we're doing the right thing. My only fear is if this loon had a chip put in her--which I feel is doubtfull. Can you feel this chip under the skin if it's there? She looks very swollen in the rear, like she is maybe going into heat, so my thought is if they didn't spay her, they probably didn't bother with a chip. Any thoughts from you animal lovers?

the microchip is about the same size as a grain of rice. Is this what you feel if so then yes. However you shouldn't be able to. It may have been inserted to shallow.

I would go to the local humane society or shelter. If they have had issues with animals being removed, most likely the animals went there. Tell them the story, let them know you found the dog wandering around and let them know your holding the dog for its safety, as you honestly feel it belongs to that household. If the people at the humane society are doing their job right, they will give this dog a once over to make sure nothing is wrong with it, and check for the chip. Make sure you let them know your interest in keeping this dog if it is not chipped or if it is and belongs to that house.

Trust me, the would rather see a dog get a home where it is going to be loved, than have to put it to sleep or see it come back in a month when it gets free from its current owners.

Good luck

heres what you can do go to a either a animal shelter or vet office they can check with a scanner to see if she has been chipped. sometimes you can feel the chip up around the neck area as i put in many of them my self work as a kennel tech. also take her to the vet and make sure that the problem she is having is from going into heat and not something else. heres another thought in the state of pa where i am from if you get a dog license for the animal then it legally belongs to you.

There is a slight possibility that you could be able to feel it. But as others are saying, you can take it to a vet, and they can scan it and tell you for sure. If it does have a chip, its not like they will take the dog from you. They would give you a number to call (there are 2 types of microchips out there - avid, and home again) they aren't interchangable - meaning an avid chip reader will detect a homeagain chip, or a homeagain reader will detect an avid chip, but wont give you the chip's id numbers. You would have to get the number to this place, and call them to find out who the owners are. Once you call the home-again place thou, they would contact the owners.
But for starters contact your vet, and have them scan the dog, it wont cost you anything, and there's no risks involved.

You can not feel the chip, at least I can not feel Miss Piggies, I just checked. You can take her to the shelter tell them you found her, and want to keep her, they can scan her, they will let you keep her as they charge to turn in a dog.

"however morally I think we're doing the right thing" I think you are doing the right thing. just my opinion. if they are the way you say they are, I dought they chipped her. I have done rescue more than half my life.

Good luck, (O:

Microchips are usually put between the shoulder blades. I suggest taking the dog to the local shelter. Explain the situation and let them scan the dog to see if it is microchipped. Depending upon your particular shelter "rules" they might let you "foster" the dog if he is not micro-ed. Then you could adopt him. If he is micro-ed they do have to notify the owners. BUT the shelter could go further... for the safety of the dog, and have it examined by their vet to possibly find any kind of mistreatment/neglect of the dog. If something does turn up then the dog would not be returned to them. Good Luck.

If you can, try to take her to your local vet. A very small dog (such as a chihuaha or rat terrier) it is possible that you can feel the microchip, but just to make sure, have someone check it out. A shelter will do this for free, as will most vets as long as you explain your situation.

No, you can't feel a chip if it's been inserted correctly. The only way to know if a dog is chipped is to get it scanned.

yes you can feel it..if its there, especially when its a lil dog..,and if you really want to be sure, you can get it scaned too..and if chip is there you will know who's the rightfully owner of the animal..
and i think you do the morally right thing if the situation is like you explained.

Both times I have had a dog chipped, I could feel it between their shoulder blades. It takes a little feeling around, but if it's there you should be able to tell.
