Ah -- great question.......big Big BIG hair! Out there hair! The key to an effective 80's do is HAIRSPRAY! (mousse & molding mud, a rattail comb, and a pik.......get volume in your hair using a diffuser on your hairdryer)
STANDARD 'do..........
Very easy -- You don't need anything fancy. If you have long hair, the night before, dampen your hair, and section it off in huge chunks of lets say 8-10 areas. then you will roll each section up around a sock - as if the sock was a curler. once it is rolled up to your head, you tie the 2 ends of the sock together, in a bow, around the center to hold it in place. then - this is the most important part -- you spray the heck out of it with hairspray and go to sleep. You use the socks, because it will give your hair some movement -- but, the curl won't be so tight, as to look poodley -- that is really icky. (If your hair is shorter, use strips of fabric & do the same thing - or, you could go for the really pudgy pink foam rollers too, just curl it loosely, not tight, and don't forget the spray.)

The next day, you take something comprable to "industrial strength" hairspray (the stuff that is ultra, mega, out of this world type hold -- the strongest you can find....the cheap stuff works best!) and a "rattail" comb - or comb with the tines close together and you start "ratting it" -- sectioning off pieces, hold the ends, and then run the comb from the tip back toward the head, drawing the hair closer to the head. That will give you the volume and lift. If you don't know how to "rat" your hair, ask an old lady -- that was the 60's thing to do too, and they can show you. You just basically want to get as much volume up on the top of your head. Your bangs will poof forward and out. The taller you get your hair, the better.

If you're on the wilder side, go look at photos of Cindy Lauper and Madonna, when they made their break through. That was Madonna's material girl era & Cindy's "Girls Just want to Have Fun" time. Then they had the temporary color mousse, and got into the moulding muds and gels to separate looser, corkscrew type curls mixed in with everything else -- messy, bedhead meets vidal sassoon. lol have fun!

The key to hair is the spray -- as thick as varnish - and crunchy.

u could also do big hair. Just big curls and tease it out like the Rock stars had. R u can do punk..add temp color gels to hair depending of course what your outfit is. Don't forget heavy eyeshadow usually blue.

Where it all down and crimp it! You can find a crimper for a good $10 and its something you can do at home.

Curl it with hotrollers and then pull it all to one side of your head into a high pony tail.
