It's a big deal! In the US and anywhere else too.
Being over weight is a serious health issue, it increases the chance of diabetes, heart disease, hight blood pressure and many other problems.
It would be fairly simple to do a search to find out accurate numbers but it's high ...about 1 in 5 is seriously overweight. Other developed countries are catching up with this figure though. Obesity is not called the "Modern Disease" for nothing.

It's a very big deal. It's not just a matter of asthetics it's about health and quality of life. These folks, God bless 'em, have more medical problems and put an uneccessary strain on the health care system. Not to mention there are mean people out there who single them out just because of their weight. It's become an acceptable prejudice in the eyes of some.

i have to answer this one, this is one of my pet peeves. YES. americans, one the whole, are a bunch of fat lazy gluttons who stuff their lazy bodies with nothing but junk food then sit in their car, couch or computer chair for most of the day. we have horrible food available 24/7 for cheap and it tastes great. children are fatter now than ever and have diabetes and high blood pressure and stuff you rarely saw in the past. i work in a doctors office with all female patients and nowadays you dont even think she is overweight unless they are over 225 or so. it is so common to have women weighing 180 or more that it starts to seem normal after a while-but i know it is not. i wish i could be here in 100 yrs, i bet the avg person will be around 300# by then. god help us

overweight people are more likely to get heart problems and diabetes. since america is one of the fattest countries in the world, americans should really watch their weights.
