OpenOffice is a program suite very similar to MS Office except it's open source and free. Yes you can use it to open and edit your old files, it will just convert them to OpenOffice files.

OpenOffice is an open-source program that is a good replacement for Microsoft Office. It will open your MS Office documents and you can save in Office formats (.doc, .xls, etc.). I recommend it and use it regularly as it has all the uses that MS Office has, including word processing (Word), spreadsheet (Excel), presentations (Powerpoint), etc. Get it free at the URL below.

OpenOffice is a Microsoft Office clone. It is an open source free office suite which can replace Microsoft Office. OpenOffice includes a word processor, presentation tool and a spreadsheet manager. OpenOffice uses its own file type and not Word's .doc file type. But it can still read .doc files. You can download for free from their website at:

If you are only interested in a word processor replacement for Mircosoft Word then you are better off using Abiword. Abiword is totally free and just does word proccessing. It looks and works identical to Microsoft Word but lacks certain advanced features but hardly anyone uses them anyway. It can open and save .doc files. You can download it:

If you don't have broadband internet connection then download Abiword (5 MB) versus OpenOffic (93 MB).

Open office is a generic of microsoft office, it works basically just like microsoft office, and will open almost any office document. It's free, and it's very useful. I would suggest you get it - rather than pay Bill any more money!
