All the museums of the Smithsonian are free, and most are located on the National Mall, between the US Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial. There is a tourbus that runs around the mall. You pay once and can get on and off when you want.
There are cafeterias in the National Art Gallery and the Air and Space Museum, and there are street vendors that sell food too.
Have a great time in Washington!

A map would be handy, plus do you know where you will be staying? Hotel? With friends/family? Will you drive or take a taxi? It's good to have a plan ahead of time before coming to a foreign country. There are visitor centers/booth in the city, I think they may also have one at the airport, so you can retreive some extra information about where to stay, attrations, dining, entertainment, etc.

You can find a taxi cab anywhere. Just hop in and give the driver the address/attraction/landmark you're looking for and the driver will take you there. Also, if you're worried about getting lost sightseeing, you could take one of those buses that will drive you from attraction to attraction. You can generally find them around the national mall.
