MX5's the regtops are very very popular, have rear wheel drive and are pretty entertaining. As long as you don't mind having 2 seats. Great in the summer, cold in the winter.

MX3s are a bit more rare. The 1.8 V6 sounds great, but a bit heavy fuel wise. Front wheel drive, so not as entertaining as the MX5.

VW Golf GTI. Very well renowned as the original hot hatch. Great when working well, stubborn as a mule when wrong. Great fun, really quick off the mark. More than likely, a lot thrashed.

Ford Probe. 2.0 or 2.6 v6. High insurance, American looks. Great ride, very nice to drive, bit skittish on 'greasy' roads. Not as popular as say, a Vauxhall Calibra, but less likely to be thrashed about. The 2.6 is a Mazda MX6 under the skin. Pretty reliable, Easy to fix, expensive if it goes wrong. Looking at over £1000 for head gasket. (experience on that one!)

Would not touch any form of cheap Subaru, or Mitsubishi (i.e. Lancer/Evo ot Impreza) as they will of been thashed endlessly.

If you want REALLY retro, go for a Ford Capri! £3k would probably get you a 2.0 lazer. Not fast, easy to maintain, cheap to get parts. Live axle set up at the rear can get you into a heap of trouble should you take a corner sideways!

Sounds like you are NOT in the US, so a Mustang probably won't be possible. Like some others are suggesting, the Mazda MX5 Miata is an excellent value, tough as nails and has a giant aftermarket & custom parts network. It's like owning and driving a '63 MGB that never breaks down and the electrics always work. Wow!

One of your options would be an Mazda MX5 convertible. You will probably need to get one about 10 years old, but they are quite reliable and would give you a few decent years - perhaps a little bit girlie, but 3k aint going to get you an Aston Martin!

Mazda MX5 Mk I Eunos, OR Honda CRX Del Sol both excellent nippy convertibles with enough go to be fun, but cheap fuel economy and insurance too.

Honda CRX. Goes like stink. The later model 2 seater open top is great.
Insurance can be high if it's modified like mine. But it cheap to run round town. You can drink the juice when your slamming it through the V-Tec power band

I bought my 1995 mustang convertible for 3000. I have so far put in about about 2500 dollars worth of repair, but if your can work on it yourself it won't be as bad. You could check out older cameros and firebirds too

Check around and see who has anything available for L3k from among Internet services, local advertisements, and car dealers. After finding what is available, see what fits in your category and then if you decide on one, buy it.
