Enlist and ask your commander

As a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, here's the straight skinny:

First, you have to be appointed to one. That can come from your representative, your commanding officer if you are enlisted, or other government sources. However, to get that appointment, you will need to distinguish yourself from all the other potential applicants. In my case, I stood number one in a state-wide civil service exam; and my Congressman used those results to appoint his share of applicants. The applicant to accepted ratio for the Naval Academy has been about 10:1 over the years.

Second, once appointed, you will need to take both physical and mental tests to ensure you are qualified to go to an academy. I had to take a two day, 8 hour per day test to confirm my academic qualifications for the Naval Academy. I also had to take two physicals to confirm my health and such.

Back when I went into the Naval Academy, West Point, the Army's academy, was accepting appointees with less than 20-20 vision. The Naval Academy was not. Each academy has its own standards, which are predicated in part on how badly their branch of service needs commissioned officers. It is common knowledge that the Army is not filling its quotas at this time; so I would have to guess West Point's standards are currently the most lenient of the three service academies.

Well, I know you need the recommendation of a member of the US Congress. When I interned for my Congressman, I helped write some of the letters for consitutents who had kids that were applying.

I know that both West Point and the Naval Academy in Annapolis are tough to get in to. I really don't know about any others. The first thing I would do is check out their websites, below.

Good luck!

You need to have excellent grades, have played several sports in high school and excelled in them. Some of them have age limits where you can't be accepted after a certain age. I recomend West Point. In Ranger School many of the 2Lts who went ROTC could be counted on to be idiots, but the West Point guys were generally squared away.
