It is a matter of taste. There is a lot of snobbery about wine, but the only 'best' wine is the wine that suits your taste and the food you are drinking it with.
Why not go to your local wine store - Oddbins are very good - and see if they are doing tastings so that you can try out different styles of wine and see which you like.
My personal favourite is New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon. But you might hate that!

It totally depends on what you like.
If your choosing a wine for a meal. It depends on what your serving.. Red or white meat. Usually the wine matches. Red meat, red wine.
Do u like sweet, bubbly, sharp, mellow, flavour, or do u simple want to get sloshed.. cause red wine will do that very quick and give you the headache from hell too..
I like dry wines.. so for a white i go for Pino Grigio - Asda do a great one - stowells - its a chardonnay.. Very nice.. goes with most dishes and is great for just casual drinks too.
Red wine, My personal taste again i would go for Merlot, or a cabernet savingnon. I think the south africa red is great in this. Its has strong flavours and is indeed dry.
If you dont fancy any of these go for zinfandel. Most people like these.. you can get them sparkle, fruity.
hope this helps

There is no such thing as the best wine since each wine has its own unique taste. It really depend on your own taste. White wine is good for appretizer, red wine is good for use during the meal; however, the meat from your dinner will be another factor as well.

It all boils down to personal preference surely. I like white wine with a meal but red on a drinking evening to get sozzled.

The very best wines are red, because they can mature for longer without spoiling.
Petrus and Chateau Margaux are worth investing in, but they don't come cheap.

As I suffer from migraine I never drink red wine; always white, - and the best there is would have to be Moscato D'asti. My husband and I usually end up sharing two whole bottles when we really "dive into it" (which is not as often as I would like)....

As a lot of people are saying, its down to taste.
All that matters is what you like. And if you don't know, you are going to have some fun finding out.
Go out and buy some bottles, see which ones you like, then buy them again.
Start with cheap ones, and work your way up.
And beware, not all expensive bottles will be nice to your taste.
Also, you may like one type for a bit then go off it.

It depends what you are having to eat with it. I do prefer sweet whites as reds can be too heavy for me. A nice white with a bar of chocolate!
