It's the same thing as a labrador dog. They come in three colors: Yellow, black, and chocolate (brown).
See the American Kennel Club's description of the breed (link below).

The breed is the Labrador Retreiver..the color is chocolate. The Lab is the most popular dog in the USA. Unfortunately because of this they are overbred and ill bred in many cases. They are a hunting breed and before all the irresponsible breeding started they were very easily trained, very gentle, willing dogs. They love water and need a lot of exercise. They come in three recognized colors..yellow, black and chocolate..beware of breeders advertising "rare" colors such as silver, white, brindle. Go to the AKC site for more info and to see the breed standard

Chocolate is only a color description. The breed is Labrador Retriever.
The breeder you got your dog from should be able to give you all information on the breed. That is why one should buy from a reputable breeder, and why responsibility is neccessary in breeding dogs. To the breed as well as the buyer of dogs.
If you can't get info from the breeder, You should get a book, do a search on the web for a Labrador club for information.
They were bred as a hunting dog. As most dogs nowadays, most breeders are not concentrating as much for the temperament, instincts for which a particular breed was bred for. Also, a lot of Labs have been bred for service dogs. There is, as in any breed, a wide variation in "type": which includes physical attributes (size of dog, height and weight ratio, amount of bone) and temperament, personality, drive and instinct.
A research of pedigree will tell you a lot. Conformation titles, obedience titles, hunting titles.

quote
I have heard they are one of the hardest dogs to train because they have the mentality of a 2 year old, whether this is true or not, but they are very lovable.
I would imagine Marlyn Fenders owner of "NFC Storms Riptide Star" would probably disagree with that statement as would Dennis Voit owner of "NFTCH Quick Windstorm", Might even want to check with Charley Tyson owner of "FC-AFC Barracuda Blue"
I can go on if you like, I probably know 50 very talented Chocolate Labs,, including my own

My hubby left his Farrera Roche's (sp?) on his low bedside table along with a huge bar of dark chocolate, luckily for him the dog only ate the Roche's and didn't touch the chocolate. She is a small dog and was nursing 2 week old puppies at the time, so I was really mad at him and really worried for her and the pups. There were no side effects thankfully, other than pooping out the wrappers.

Yeah, I have a black lab. They are really great family pets and they are very easy to train. But, they can be a little mouthy ( as in nipping and biting playfully) well, at least my dog is.
