Yes.

"Religion" as we know it today, i.e. "christianity," is little more than the sentimental residue of a medieval programme of tyranny and oppression. It began as a Roman political move; flourished by killing off all challengers and systematically destroying all the accumulated knowledge that would've contradicted its insane tenets (the "Dark Ages"); perpetuated its hegemony by maintaining a monopoly on learning and burning lingering rebels at the stake; eventually split into schizms owing to its inherent corruption, each of which maintained its essential features of bigotry and jealous self-righteousness; survived the inevitable attacks on its dogmas during the "Enlightenment" by appealing to the generationally ingrained superstitions of the ignorant masses; and thus continues to this day, in spite of all the progress that humanity has managed to make regardless.

I feel that most religions had a 'good intention', when first starting. As you may note, they keep breaking into different sects, with different interpretations of their points of view about the spiritual nature of all. The end result of course it that each person IS their own "religion", as none of us can believe exactly the same as another, since we haven't had the exact same lives.

I would say the first churches intended to "save us" from our ignorance and fears, as there were no formal institutions for the 'common man' under the old monarchies and not much knowledge about how things worked anyway.

Not on man, they get you when your still a boy. The trick is to hack into a religious faith, steel the stuff that helps you control your own world and get out.

Religion can mess someone up, but not a man who teaches the uncompromised Word of God, like its supposed to be. God never, ever uses fear to scare us into coming to Him. The Bible tells us that God hath not given unto us a "spirit of fear", but of power, love, and a sound mind...., not a messed up mind. He draws us unto himself with love..........just pure love, unconditional love!
