French fries is salty so it's good to even it out with ketchup that's sweet.
Mashed potatoes are sweet, so it's better with gravy that's saltier.

Because Mashed Potatoes have butter in them and french fries don't. Butter and Ketchup tast bad together.

Cause mashed potatoes tastes better with butter or cream cheese and fried potatoes taste good with mustard and ketchup

My boyfriend this it's good on mashed potatoes, too. And baked potatoes. Not just french fries.

I actaully have friends who eat ketchup on mashed potatoes but not on french fries. I guess it just depends.

I have a friend that puts ketchup on mashed potatoes! Mashed potatoes are made for gravy, in my opinion!!

It's a texture issue. Mashed potatoes have a lot of moisture, so you don't have the liquid/dry contrast that you would have with french fries.

I think it is because mashed potatoes are considered fancy-pants, and ketchup is not. Just doesn't seem fair, does it?
