ABOUT UNITS
The amount of alcohol you drink can be measured in terms of units.
Each of these drinks contains ONE UNIT
Half a pint of beer
1 small glass of sherry
1 single measure of whisky, rum, gin, etc.
1 small glass of wine
Other useful measures are:
1 can of beer = l.5 UNITS
1 pint of beer = 2 UNITS
1 bottle of sherry = 12 UNITS
1 bottle of wine = 7 UNITS
1 bottle of spirits = 30 UNITS
These units to ordinary strength beer, extra strong beer, lagers and ciders can have twice as many units, or even more (for example Carlsberg Brew has about 4 units in a can).
RECOMMENDED LIMITS
WOMEN:
No more than 2 to 3 units a day or less with alcohol free days in between.
MEN:
No more than 3 to 4 units a day or less with alcohol free days in between.
Young and older people should drink far less than these amounts for health reasons, pregnant women should abstain. It is important to know how many units there are in your drink, because then:
You can measure your alcohol intake
You can set yourself limits
You know how long it will take for the alcohol to leave your system
Remember:
It takes on average 1 HOUR for 1 UNIT to leave your body. This means that it takes 2 hours for 1 pint of beer, and so on.
