Try to meet him in between. Compliment each other. Boost his confidence and encourage him on fields you know he is way much better than you are, or yet even in those which is the other way around.
You are in a relationship thus you should be supporting each other instead of competing. If both of you will only put the other FIRST before yourself, you can't go wrong in the long run.
