I am living in Italy for a semester. I bought a bottle of Absolut Vodka from the supermarket yesterday, put it in the freezer like I always do, and when I opened up my freezer today the vodka in the bottle was frozen almost completely solid, I'd say at least 95% frozen. I was under the impression that it was impossible for hard liquor to freeze, and have never seen it happen before. What gives?!

It is still sealed, there's no way anybody could have opened it/tampered with it.

I'm mistaken? It is a solid block of vodka. The glass used for liquor is much stronger than what they use for bottled beer. Thanks for the helpful response..

Larry - only water expands when frozen. All other liquids contract. As for the vodka - pure ethanol freezes at -114 C. The vodka isn't pure so it would freeze at a higher temp, but still... pretty weird.

Either it's not really 80 proof, you have a powerful freezer or it is not 95% frozen it only looks that way.
Alcohol freezes at a much lower temperature than water and normally they are well mixed, but sometimes enough water isn't mixed and there is a seed (such as an imperfection in the glass) to cause an ice crystal to grow and then take off, freezing the water but not the alcohol. Since the alcohol is as cold as the ice it wont cause it to melt, and you end up with slushy vodka. It's uncommon but not impossible.

You are right - vodka does not freeze at normal freezer temperatures. Could someone have opened it and took some then filled it back with water without you knowing? Or could your freezer just be freakishly colder than other peoples :). If no-one has opened it then you could try contacting absolut to complain - you never know - you might get a few free bottles from them!

Normally, the vodka would become viscous at the most (very thick, like molasses)
There is a slim chance that the cap seal was broken and the humidity in the freezer cause water to condense. This would cause some ice chunks to form. However, that would not explain 95% frozen.
If you have roomates...I would suggest talking with them.
It has been opened and now contains water.

You are mistaken. The vodka is not 95% frozen. If it were, the bottle would have broken. As liquids freeze they expand. Anyone who has ever put a bottle of beer in the freezer to get it cold, and has forgotten about it can attest to this.

Absolut vodka in America is always 80 proof. Have you checked the proof of your bottle? Italy may have different standards and have the proof or alchol content set at a lower level. Anything under 80 proof will freeze, although 80 proof can freeze given extreme temperatures. Please let me know what it is, I'm curious. I have bartended for years!

Since alcohol doesn't freeze at freezer temperature it seems that your bottle has been tampered with and I would bring the unopened bottle back to the store with your complaint.

40% alcohol will freeze somewhere around -60 F
I think it's highly unlikely that your home freezer reached that temp. It's more likely that your bottle has been tampered with.
