A Jew is person belonging to the tribe of Judah. The name is not used in the Bible account prior to the fall of the ten-tribe kingdom of Israel. The southern kingdom was called Judah, and the people were called sons of Judah or the tribe of the sons of Judah. The first one to use the name Jews was the writer of the books of Kings, doubtless Jeremiah, whose prophetic service began in 647 B.C.E

The jews according to the bible are decendants of Juda the tribe of Juda. Abraham was the first Hebrew. All Jews are Hebrews, but not all Hebrews are Jews. Jacab had 12 sons whose children became the 12 Tribes of Isreal. Jacob is Isreal.

I think Anthea H has it right. After God changed Jacob's name to Israel, they were called Israelites. I didn't know that they were first called Jews in Kings.

In Hebrew, the word "Israel" refers to both the land, Israel, and to the people, Israel. Jews to this day call ourselves "Israel."

Friday night and Saturday are not good times to ask Jewish questions. Orthodox Jews are the most knowledgable and they don't use the computer on the Sabbath.

Abram was Chaldean as I assume was Sarai. But in a religious sense, when he circumcised himself and his sons as a sign of his covenant with God, he became Abraham and he and they became the first Jews. Fascinating that God would choose whacking of the foreskin as a sign of the covenant. It's not like wearing a cross pendant is it? Jews would have to haul out Mr. Winky to prove their Jewishness and women couldn't prove it at all.

I personally think the story is ludicrous.

Abe: "Hey everybody, God told me to cut the skin off all your penises!"
Everybody: "You try it Abe, and the skin of your penis isn't the only thing that'll get cut."
