To answer to your question in one sentence, Bangla is several notches higher than Hindi in terms of richness and literature. I had a look at the two previous answers from Sarah and lovely hubby. The latter's answer seems way off the mark. Sarah agrees with my answer though I don't agree to her explanation. Hindi isn't rich not because it is not spoken in South India. In terms of literary richness, nearly all the South Indian languages in general and Tamil in particular are way above Hindi. Hindi in its present form came much later from the mother language Sanskrit. Tamil is a more ancient language than Hindi and boasts of great literature during the period when Hindi was not even born. Different dialects of Hindi are spoken by different Hindi speaking states. If Shuddh (pure) Hindi is what is spoken in Uttar Pradesh, in Bihar it is the Bhojpuri form across a large belt. But all external influences go on to make a language richer. Even Queen's English has adopted foreign words including Hindi in its vocabulary. In comparison, Bangla in its present form is not older than Hindi and also derives itself from Sanskrit. But with the growth and advent of the language, literature was written which slowly enriched Bangla and developed it. The only notable piece of ancient Hindi literature, which is widely read even today is Tulsidas's Ramayan. Very few pieces of notable ancient Hindi literature is known to us. In comparison, several ancient Bangla religious literary works were composed and flourished. Manasa Mangal and other Hindu religious texts were written. Finally, a language becomes rich when writers write prolifically in that language. Hindi speakers at large, for some reason have shown a reluctance to pen serious works in their mother tongue. And they have also not distinguished themselves as voracious readers of literary works. By comparison, Bangla speakers are not only good writers but good readers as well. The record crowds and sales at the Kolkata Book Fair, year after year is a testimony to the above fact. Nowhere in India does a book fair attract such crowds or record soaring sales. Refined and perfected by literary doyens such as Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Kazi Nazrul Islam etc. Bangla is definitely one of the richest languages of the world thanks to the love and patronisation of the language from Bangla speakers across the world.
