It'll depend on if they're qualified to fly the respective aircraft. For argument's sake, say they ALL are. Then, it goes by class ranking from their flight class. Say there's 20 openings for fighter pilots. The 20 highest cadets applying for it will be selected for the training.

Capability, desirability, and need.
First, you have to be physically qualified, which means 20-20 vision for pilots and generally something less for navigators or engineers.
Second, you have to select the training pipeline: fighter, attack, bomber, transport, etc. you desire.
Third, the Air Force has to have a need for more bodies in those kinds of aircraft.
Somewhere in the pipeline, the Air Force will determine your ability to continue on in that pipeline. For example, if you requested fighters, but your flight grades indicate you are marginal as a pilot, you may be relegated to the transport pipeline instead.

First you got to get in the Air Force Academy and you get assigned to where they put you and as far as an aircraft that's a question you have to ask when you get there.

Cadets, as all other officers, apply to be pilots in general. If they pass all the screenings, they are accepted into pilot training, and how they do determines what aircraft they may be accepted to fly.
