A server is a computer that other people will join online to do or get something.

Ex. Some games online you will join a server to play against other people also playing on that server

A server has many roles:
E-mail Server
Proxy
File
Print
Authentication but to name a few.

There is a client and there is server. The server is the terminal that accepts request (http, ftp, etc...) and send back responses to clients. As simple as this!
