Yes we had a dog that drowned in our pool when I was younger. It was very hard to get over and time truly healed the pain. Do not feel guiltly because it was not your fault. Accidents do happen and we learn from them. I have had some friends that had things like that happen to their pets and they have found making a scrapbook or an album of the pet really helped.

It is so heartbreaking to lose a pet to an accident. I have never lost a pet that way, but others I know have lost dogs to car accidents (the dog got out in the street and was hit). Of course, we cannot change the nature of accidents, so we must deal with the grief and guilt as best we can. Try not to blame yourself--accidents are things we could not control. Time is the only healer in these cases. I really don't have a good answer for you; just wanted to let you know that others will feel your pain also and understand your tears. Please know that you have the sympathy of many people. If you loved your dog and cared for him the best you could, you gave him a happy life.

I have not been in your exact situation. But I've been in traumatic situations where you replay the events in your head over and over and try to change what actually happened. You will never get over the pain of the loss but you need to stop wishing you could go back and change it. You can't. It happened and there is no going back. So, you have to make peace with it and move forward. This will take time. The grief will always be with you to some extent. But you shouldn't feel guilty. Things happen. Accept that we are in control of very little. Allow yourself to feel the pain but also allow yourself to move forward from this.
I'm sorry for your loss and hope you find some source of strenght to get through this. Like I said, accept that you cannot go back. Grieve but don't live in the past where you cannot do anything.

My puppy died from Bloat at the age of 5 years old. He was absolutely devoted to me, even the cats loved him as he spent every waking and even sleeping moment taking care of us. Once we forgot to close one of the outside doors, and he spent the night lying across the door making sure no one came in. No the pain never goes away, but with time hopefully other joys will help you feel better. It has been over six years and I still miss him terribly, and feel the pain when I think about it.

I was staying with my parents cos I'd just broke up with my boyfriend and my puppy escaped from their house. He was knocked over and killed, I found him on the road so I brought him home and buried him, that really helped cos it gave me chance to say goodbye. I still really miss him but it hurts less now. Hope you feel better soon x
