I saw a lady go to jail for a year for driving without a license so that she could feed her three kids a few weeks ago. It was her 7th and 8th offense.
She lost her license because she couldn't pay a ticket for having a light out, and as the judge read her case he noted she had no reckless or DUI's on there.
Does criminal describe this person? I'm more partial to hero.
Moreover, shouldn't we diffrentiate between people who are morally bankrupt [such as many officers] and people who don't follow rules very well?

Most places don't have busses, and many people in this circumstance don't have have the money to move.
I would have paid her ticket if I could have. With all of the fines, she now owes thousands for a problem money could have made dissappear easily.

A criminal is someone who does not accept the conventional model of behaviour, a social reject.
Moreover, in countries where only the powerful decide the law, a criminal is someone who realises that the system is working for others and decides to start acting independently.
A criminal is someone who can think for themself.
In a just society (if that's possible given human nature) a criminal is someone whose actions are harmful to others.
Is someone who puts drugs into their body a criminal? No. Is a heroin addict who beats up an old lady for drug money a criminal? Of course.

Most states allow you up to ten days after citation to fix your faulty equipment and show the court that you fixed it, and then you only pay the minimum of $10 court cost, then, I'm pretty sure that you don't lose a license for an equipment violation, my best guess is she got a no tail-light ticket, never did anything about it, ticket turned into a warrant, and then was unable to get her license, then she just kept getting pulled over again and again 8th offense, this person does not belong on the road.....while it's commendable that she's out there working for her kids, it's also a gigantic liability for officers to allow her to keep driving, how would you feel if this lady ran over your kid, "it was her fault for driving with no DL, or It was that stupid cop who let keep on driving down the road even after finding out that not only did she not have a DL, it was her 8th offense"......This lady just needs to get it together and she'll be fine.......

At what point between 1st offense and 6th did it occur to this woman, maybe I should get my license? Why did she get stopped 8 times for this? Even lightning strikes become almost non-existent after hitting the same mark three times.
It is illegal to drive without a license, and she should have found a way to obey the law. She wasn't driving without a license to feed her kids. She was teaching her children to disobey the laws of the land, and if you have a feeling that the laws don't favor you, then you can make up your own rules.
Yes it's criminal that she did not think enough of her children to put them at risk, because who will feed them for the next year? Trust me, she was warned of the consequences of continually disobeying the law. It probably would not happpen as frequently as it does if the judge imposed the one year sentence after the second offense.
Yes it is criminal, and anyone who defends her is criminal as well. There are always other options. Proof: Her children will not starve over the next year.
Sounds like a series of poor choices on her part. The price of ignorance is great.

If the courts just looked the other way and let her off the hook a ninth, tenth...twentieth time...then pretty soon nobody in your area would need a license to drive, as lawyers would use her case to get all their loosers off.
I lock up people for driving without licenses and/or insurance every single week. Am I amoral because I don't consider that maybe they are driving to the grocery store to feed their babies?
Whatever. Click, click.
I have to pay for my license, tags and insurance - and the difference between a lot of these people and me is that nobody gives me anything, I work for every dime.

Oh BOO HOO. Let off the hook seven times and didn't learn a thing from it. There's so many social welfare outfits out there who are willing to help those who aren't willing to help themselves that it isn't even funny any more. Many Officers are morally bankrupt? How many Officers do you know? Could it be you've been handed a ticket or two in your time and, "Oh my God, those Officers are like, so, just morally bankrupt because they didn't understand that i was in a hurry to get to the mall, whatever." NEWS FLASH: People who don't follow the rules are eventaully punished for their deliberate criminal behavior. Now finish your Kool Aid.

Eight times doing the same thing wrong may not be ilegal, but it is stupid. Surely she could have found somebody who could have helped her pay the first ticket. It sounds as though the judge was more than tollerant, since he let her go the prior seven times. If nothing else, she was in contempt of court. If you felt so bad for her, why didn't YOU pay her first ticket?

She willfully violate the law eight times. Being a criminal is more of a state of mind than it is in the number and type of infractions. Obviously, she chose to do things her own way rather than work with the system to get her license back. I have no sympathy for her.
