Yes there is a difference. Morphine comes from poppies, the same as Heroin, and is addictive. Demerol is a synthetic, or man made drug. It too can become addictive, but is used more as it is easier to get off of.

l suffer from, Cluster H/A, Paroxysmal Hemicrania, ice-pick migraine H/A, occipital h/A and Chronic Migraine, After several trials with Beta blockers which l have the adverse worse case neurologists have halted. l use DHE, morphine for the Paroxysmal Hemicrania and all others l will use Demerol, this helps alot, since l battle h/A on a daily basis and have been confirmed to be the worse case ever to have so many multiple h/a types in one brain and as a female. Unfortunately every year it gets worse and mostly l have to be hospitalized to break the cycle.
l don t like morphine because it gives me a rush to the brain, l cannot sleep and crave cigarette smoke and l am not a smoker. l do not have any of these effects with demerol. In addition l am not addicted to this medication because l use it as a rescue and when l don t have the h/a l have no desire to take the injections. unfortunately l cannot take any oral medication l get very upset stomach, hives. These h/A are very frequently and go in turns therefore never giving me a break for long, l also use ice packs which work very well in numbing the temple area. Sadly these h/a seem to work in conjunction because they trigger the other h/a. In Europe l have less h/a than in North america.

None! Unless you re literally dying, or have terminal cancer in it s late stages. No doctor will prescribe ANY pain medication except the mostly useless hydrocodone which is 10mg Codeine and 325mg of acetaminophen. Demerol works better for me as basically a couple hours respite from my constant pain. I ve had an equal amount of Morphine and for me it did less to help my pain, and made me very restless and extremely thirsty.

Now, if only the government of the USA would STOP letting millions of people suffer who are NOT addicts or dealers, but NEED pain relief since their problems are incurable! They date overdoes as the reason for the near ban on all such opioids. But they do not tell you those overdoses are NEVER by those in constant pain just trying to survive not die!!! LETS ALL GET TOGETHER AND PUT AN END TO GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE WITH DOCTORS WHO ARE AFRAID OF BEING AUDITED FOR PRESCRIBING THE CORRECT DRUG FOR THEIR PATIENTS BASED ON THE DOCTORS TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE!!! And for further proof. Look up the increase in suicides by those in constant pain because they can t get proper treatment. A massive violation of the a Hypocratic Oath which seems to mean nothing these days.

When i have to i always get Demerol, it's synthetic and does not give me the weird feelings i get when they give me Morphine. Like i remember i would have strange dreams on Morphine, etc.

Demerol is a short acting narcotic, (4 to 6 hours) not recommended for long term chronic pain use.
Morphine is a long acting narcotic usually given in time released capsules it is usually given in 2 daily doses 12 hours apart.
Both medications are addictive, however taken as directed for chronic pain the long acting is narcotic is the better choice because the medication level in the body does not fluctuate up and down like a short acting narcotic.

demerol (meperidine) is a synthetic opiate. Has more side effects. Morphine itself is better in severe or chronic pain because it has no real upper dose limit.
