They have some of seperate and some of non seperate. In the case of non-seperate, they normally keep the women and men sleeping arrangement in seperate areas and let them intermingle during the day.

In mental hospitals, men and women are kept in the same ward, but they have different rooms. Due to the nature of their illnesses, they are monitored by orderlies, nurses and doctors 24/7, so there is no need to keep them in different wards.

By the bye, the term "nuthouse" perpetrates the stigma that mentally ill people already face. It's insensitive, cruel and highly offensive. Most of the mentally ill are brilliant people who deserve to be treated with more respect than that.

Usually they don't have separate asylums, but they do have separate wards or even separate buildings. I believe there are a very few all-male or all-female institutions but this is a leftover from the XIX Century.

They may be housed in the same facility, but should be kept in separate units. This should be done to preclude any sexual activities between male and female patients.

I am not aware of separate facilities...a nut is a nut right? (just kiddin'). Therapy and treatment are different I suppose that would be the most important thing.
