First of all who said that the spare the rod is figurative.
Anyway, why is it that people feel that if something is said figuratively, then you have to assume ALL is figurative. Does this mean that if you use a "figure of speech" I have to assume that everything else you ever say is only a figure of speech? Of course not. Its the same with the bible. There is history, prophecy, poetry, parables etc. If other books contain figures of speech, you would not therefore assume that the entire book is such. Don't you think God is capable of conveying some things to us in different ways? We are not idiots, we can tell the difference between something that is meant to be a figure of speech and something that isn't.

first it is not figurative in the days of the bible children were punished with a wooden rod, it only became figurative when some dumb a** decided it was wrong to spank a child and look what we have to day, kids out of control killing and doing things kids would have never have dreamed of doing before. and before you start thinking i am a bible thumper your wrong i have read the book done research on it and the history of Israel but do not conform to any faith!

Its not figuragive. It is clear. man said "spare the rod, spoil the child". God said....
Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Proverbs 23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die
This is the confusion that takes place when mortal man tries to improve on the word of God, for God's word is perfect and with out flaws. It is satan who is the author of confusion, that causes man to try to "imporve" on something that is already perfect.
Foolishness will lead to sinful acts, if you do not correct the child and teach them the right from the wrong. Whom do you follow, the laws of mortal man, or the laws of our creator the Almighty God? I place all my faith in God.
