As far as I know, the only requirements for a promise ring is the understanding that it represents the idea of being "engaged to be engaged". I don't see why it can't be your birthstone, or any other gemstone you like.

Sure it could...Chances are if he knew what color your birth stone was, he went the extra mile to find a promise ring that was the color of your birthstone! (or ordered a special one)Thats sweet!
Even if he didn't know, he still got you a ring, thats a big step for a guy! Who cares what color it is:)

a promise ring can be any ring it just has to be said that this is what the ring is for some people only see diamonds as for engagement or marriage so thinking it must be a diamond is not true because for some men diamonds are a scary thing when they are not quite ready but if they are getting you a promise ring just remember this is one step closer so it could be any ring as long as it was said that this is what the ring is to symbolize

Sure. :) A promise ring can be anything at all. What's important is the meaning behind it, not so much the ring itself. :)

You can use any ring you like to show friendship or engagement.
It's more about how much you can afford to spend and showing your true feelings than what colour stone is in a ring.

Yes, but genuinely promise rings were either silver or gold or diamonds. This may help!

Sure, it's not the color of the ring, but what it stands for.
