Historically, painters from all cultures have depicted Jesus as resembling their own people. Look at the paintings you can buy in Mexico vs the ones in Rome... .And for the record, the people living in the middle east (native Israelis, Egyptians etc) during the time of Christ were quite dark-skinned. They resembled today's Egyptians, Jordanians, Syrians, etc far more than pale-skinned Europeans (which is how most renaissance painters depicted everyone)

I didn't think he looked like a hippie. The "Dog" has long hair but he doesn't look like a hippie. Barbers were not as plentiful in those days, so more men had long hair and beards. Maybe you could turn the question around and ask; why did hippies make themselves look like Jesus?

Learn your history, child.
There were no hippies or crackheads in 15th century Italy.

Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard. ~ Leviticus 19:27
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. ~ Matthew 5:17 (Jesus Christ)
If Christ came to fulfill the law then he would have adhered to the law in Leviticus and thus would not have cut the hair at the sides of his head or clip off the edges of the beard.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. ~ Isaiah 53:2
The scripture above is prophesying about Christ. So what ever Christ looked like as a man he was not beautiful or desirable in appearance.
God purposely didn't reveal Jesus' full appearance in scripture so that it would not cause conflict between races and peoples appearances. God is love not vanity.

And I suppose we'd all feel more comfortable if he was portrayed with a nice clean shave, oily hair and an Armani suit? I don't know about you but that would scare the hell out of me.

May I offer that your frame of reference is too Western and too urban. Look at the average middle eastern laborer or farmer or shepherd, and you might be seeing what Jesus really looked like.

Yeah he was no crack head. and he stood for what he was... God's son... he didnt stand up against wars and such. yeah he had long hair, but proably not as long as portrayed in the paintings. thats the way hair was worn back then, but long long hair on a man was either considdered disgraceful, or it meant that the man was taking the vow of a nazerine (spelling?)

He wasn't modeled as a hippie. Don't forget that he was stripped off before crucifixion.
