hi there. I had the implant a few years ago and honestly would not recommend it to anyone. It is inserted in the top of your arm (if you are right handed then it will go into the other arm and vice versa) on the inside just under the skin. You can have it for up to 5 years and 3 years if you are very overweight. It is supposed to stop periods but for the 2 years i had it in I bled quite alot. I suffered from awful mood swings. I can honestly say it turned me into a different person. My sex drive went to below zero. I couldnt even bare my partner to touch me. ( it came back to normal the week I had it out) I eventually couldnt take it anymore when I started to faint and have awful headaches. I put on over two stone, going from a size 10 to a size 14-16. Although I have heard that now if you put on more than 1 stone they remove it immediately. The doctor that removed it told me it was inserted way to deep, into the tissue rather than just below the skin. To have it removed they numb your arm and make a slit to take it out. I had to have slits at either end of the implant but they had to use alot of different instruments to try and get it out. I was left with two nasty scars that had to be stitched. I would recommend the mirena. Alot of people are using it now. It is inserted into the womb and stops your periods also but without all the nasty side effects. Good luck.

i had the contraceptive implant taken out last October after having it in for 3 years (i had it removed because i was ready to have a child). i had it put in because i had the same problem as you ,( i kept forgetting to my pill). it is about 2 inches log and only a few millimetres thick. it is put into your arm by an injection which hardly hurts at all. i would highly recommend it as you have it in for 3 years and it is very effective. it is taken out the same way but they do numb the area first. i hope all of this helps you decide. good luck.

I don't have one myself but my friend does. It is inserted using a type of injection (quite a thick needle and uncomfortable rather than painful). They last for 5 years on average but your doctor will tell you more accurately when you have them put in. They can be removed and it takes about 6 to 12 months for your body to become fully fertile again. My friend says it's fantastic, no periods, no pill to forget and no yucky condoms.
