If you can't afford a salon, you need to take a few things into consideration... are you going to be dancing?
If yes, something very simple would be best.
Next questions, what kind of neckline does your dress have and are you going to be wearing earrings?
If you are wearing a low neckline, then wear your hair down but perhaps pull some off of your face. If you are wearing a highnecked gown, put your hair up.
If you are wearing earrrings, make sure they show up!

Go to a good salon where they can do modern hairstyles. I love Mario Tricocci if you have one nearby. The cost is worth it for a special occasion like this where you want to look great. But, you'd better call now and explain that it's an emergency if you want to get an appt!

How about half up with lots of pretty curls in the bun
Or if it all can go up, a loose wavy "messy" bun
A low bun with a poof at the front
all down and curled/straightened

Get a conair curling iron, about 1/4 inch thick and instead of putting your hair inside the curling iron, wrap your hair around it. makes pretty waves:)

at my homecoming, a lot of girls just curled their hair and left it down. all you have to do with that is take a can of hairspray and your curling iron and take a piece of hair(it doesn't matter what size you take) and spray hairspray on it. then after it dries, take your curling iron and roll it and you will have a perfect curl that stays all night!

Yup,After you wash,half way threw air drying,put some styling cream in hair,Brush threw,5 mins. later,Start blow drying back first,clip front up,{to see better]Blow dry hair,around and out,Now do front oppisitte way,Under and out!when dunn,Play around with style to its just like the way you like and then spray hair with none sticky hair spray!{Lightly}Have fun!Hollywood
