I am a NP with a Doctorate (PhD in Nursing). Soon (2015) all NPs in the U.S. will graduate with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree (DNP).

Sure, why not. I just don't feel comfortable having medical professionals "practicing" on me.

No As You Are Not An MD. I Could Hold A PhD In Just About Anything But If I Was Working In A Hospital, I Wouldn't Insist On People Calling Me Doctor. If However You Had Exactly The Same PhD As An MD You Could Argue That You Should Be Called Dr. But Then You Would Probably Be Working As An MD And Not An NP.

Oh, the comfort apart, it might give joy ... because it the nurse who in turn has been giving the MUCH NEEDED COMFORT to miserable , suffering patients ! Though technically , the doctor gives treatment, the emotional gratitude is more for Nurse !
Yet, the situation , especially in this profession, would create lesser confusion since when somebody calls out "Doctor", it is the medical doctor who is expected to turn back and respond !

If you have a doctorate you deserve to be called doctor, although most patients will be confused. They will think you are an actual medical doctor. As an R.N. I have known NP's who are as knowledgeable as M.D.'s. I would be comfortable calling you Doctor, but on the whole it may cause some confusion.

By the time you've earned a Ph.D. (in any subject) you should feel confident enough in your ability to be beyond needing a title.

I see a nurse practitioner myself. As far as I'm concerned they are as good as a Dr. I call her Dr.
