There are four people in an adventure race that need to get across a lake. They have a small canoe. The rules say that only the slowest person in the canoe can paddle, only one or two can be in the canoe at a time, and they must all cross in the canoe. From practice, they know that:
Ann can paddle across in 1 minute.
Bill can paddle across in 2 minutes.
Sue can paddle across in 5 minutes.
Mike can paddle across in 10 minutes.

Mike and Ann go across. 10 minutes
Ann comes back. 1 minute
Sue and Ann go across. 5 minutes
Ann comes back. 1 minute
Bill and Ann go across. 2 minutes.
Everyone is across, total time is 19 minutes.

Ann has to stay in the canoe as she is the fastest canoeist. She has to allow everyone else to paddle while they are in the canoe. It does not matter which order that she takes the others across because their times will total 17 minutes. Just add 2 minutes for the two 1 minute return trips that Ann has to make to get the last 2 people and you have a total of 19 minutes.
Now if you had asked who spent the least amount of time paddling the canoe then you would have to declare it a tie between Bill and Ann but Ann would spend the most time riding in the canoe and yet spend the least amount of energy per mile the canoe was paddled.

My boyfriend figures this out not me: here it goes:
Ann takes Bill= 2 minutes
Ann comes back= 1 minute
Sue take Mike=10 minutes
Both Mike and Sue get out of the canoe and Bill gets in
Bill goes back=2 minutes
Bill picks up Ann=2 minutes
All are across in 17 minutes!!

First Mike and Sue cross the river, with mike paddlying..Then Mike stays behind, while Sue comes back across the river. She takes Bill across the river, she paddles. Then Sue stays will Mike, while Bill goes abck for Ann. Then Bill paddles Ann back across the river with Mike and Sue..
Mike takes 10 minutes to get across...
Then Sue takes 5 Minutes to get back to Bill and Ann
Then another 5 Minutes to take Bill back to Mike..
Then Bill takes 2 minutes to get back to sue.
Then 2 minutes to return to Mike and Sue.
for a total of 24 minutes

Sue & Bill will leave and Sue will paddle, reach the other side and Bill will return (5 min)
Bill & Ann will leave and Bill will paddle, reach the other side and (2 min)

Bill Takes Ann Across in 2 minutes, then returns in 2 more minutes- 4 minutes total.
Sue takes Bill Across in 5 minutes, then returns across 5 more minutes later- 10 minutes total.
Mike takes Sue across in 10 minutes then they are done -10 minutes.
4+ 10 + 10 = 24 minutes.

mike paddles sue across then mike stays there. sue goes back and gets bill. sue paddles across and she stays there. then bill goes back and gets ann. then bill paddles ann across and they both get off. =) 24 minutes i think
