Does it really matter? Jesus was not well known at that time. He just happened to be crucified with just a couple of local criminals. Jesus was in India and is believed to have been imbued with Buddhist ideals which he preached amongst his people later on for a couple of years.
Now let us follow His teachings before we try to convert others. This is more important than anything else. We must first change ourselves before we change others.

There were 2 thieves. That is what they were called. One of them Jesus took with Him to heaven because that thief told Jesus that he knew Jesus did nothing to deserve being crucified and admitted that the other thief and himself deserved their punishment.

Matthew 27:38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
