On the surface , your logic is sound. What country will be asked to rebuild ? What country will benefit from you logic ? (Iran) Just because it is hard to do, doesn't make it wrong. I say we stay and finish what we started. The future of that entire region rests on our shoulders. It isn't pretty and it sure isn't cheap, but, by cutting and running just delays what we have to do eventially.

Do we involve ourselves and in so doing get labelled 'high handed' and 'condescending', or sit back and do nothing at all. Conscience and social initiative should say different: if you saw two people killing each other, if you called yourself a decent, socially aware, human being you would stop them. It's not enough to parade our civilisation like some kind of banner...you've got to brandish it from time to time and let people know that it's there to make their lives better and happier: no matter how unnaceptable that may be to a modern, unhealthly self-conscious, society. Where would the world be without the bill of human rights, or the whole idea of human dignity? These are 'rights' every human being should acknowledge within themselves and all others.

Yes, except Catholics and Protestants sorted nothing out. Secular governments sorted it out for them and, given the chance, they will be back at each others throats in a heartbeat.
We cannot stop the fighting in Iraq. If 25,000,000 people are determined to have a civil war - then eventually they will get around to it regardless of what others do.
Every time and organized religion gains political power, or gains influence over political power, it always means rape, torturing, and killing (or, as John Adams said, they want to, “"whip and crop, and pillory and roast…us") are sure to follow.
That is precisely why America’s Founding Fathers made sure religion played no part in America’s government.
the 1797 Congress and unanimously signed into law:
“As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion”
http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/diplomacy/barbary/bar1796t.htm
Because this is how they felt:
JAMES MADISON:
•Christianity neither is, nor ever was apart of the common law. Feb. 10, 1814
•The establishment of the chaplainship to Cong[res]s is a palpable violation of equal rights, as well as of Constitutional principles: The tenets of the chaplains elected [by the majority] shut the door of worship agst the members whose creeds & consciences forbid a participation in that of the majority.
JOHN TYLER:
•“The United States have adventured upon a great and noble experiment, which is believed to have been hazarded in the absence of all previous precedent -- that of total separation of Church and State. (letter dated July 10, 1843)
ULYSSES S. GRANT:
•“Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church and the private school supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and state forever separate.”
JOHN ADAMS was right when he expressed the wish,
•“How has it happened that millions of myths, fables, legends and tales have been blended with Jewish and Christian fables and myths and have made them the most bloody religion that has ever existed? Filled with the sordid and detestable purposes of superstition and fraud?” (Letters to F.A. Van Der Kamp 1809-1816)
•” This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!”, because we likely we never find out.
But we know THOMAS JEFFERSON was correct when he wrote,
•In every country and in every age the priest [any and every clergyman] has been hostile to liberty; he is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.”
•“I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition [Christianity] one redeeming feature. They are all alike, founded upon fables and mythologies.”
ABRAHAM LINCOLN:
•“My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvationand the human origin of the scriptures, have become clearer and stronger with advancing years and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them.” (to Judge JS. Wakefield, after Willie Lincoln's death)

IF, it where just the Sunni and Shia fighting each other, OK, that is their business. But it is NOT that way. al Qua ida, the Taliban and Iran are in there stirring up the sh*t. Get all of them out of Iraq and the country will be peaceful. That is that the coalition is working toward.
