All the statements from leaders in moderate Islam seem to be soft-footing, and yet there is so much at stake in their taking a position against intolerance. Are they afraid, and if so, of what?

I don't think they are afraid to speak out or act against terrorism, violence & intolerance. I just think we don't hear their 'voices' in the media, which is a shame and misleading.

Your question should be about what Muslims can do. More Muslims should start practicing what the Qur'an preaches. They should study it properly and educate others about what Islam is truly about. Only then can Muslims achieve peaceful relations with both Muslims and non Muslims.

You have to have more integration with each others cultures, lets face it only a small faction is making the whole world a unhappy place, at the same time giving a bad name to Islam and honest decent muslims worldwide. I have visited Muslim countrys and found the people wonderful, friendly, and very likeable. Ignorance is the enemy to understanding each other.

You know terrorism and intolerance are such strange concepts to me, a person whose been educated in one of the hard core Islamic countries in the world: Saudi Arabia. Im not surprised the leaders not knowing what to say or do, its very strange for them.

Ignorance is frowned upon by God in Islam. while knowledge is made mandatory, and rash behaviour is a sign of ignorance.

That being said, I think you should rephrase your question.

Islam as a whole does not promote terrorism or intolerance neither does it advocate the breach of human rights.

If the people who follow Islam arent educated enough, its the educators who need to distance themselves from intolerance. i.e. the people who practice the religion.

The Religion itself will have to undergo a revolution if it is to distance itself from violence, intolerance, slavery, and oppresion.
It will literally take a miracle.

Desensitize. It seems as though the smallest little things start a whole jihad of sorts. I have no problem with protecting your faith, but pick your battles. Divine retribution is so overrated. They should try that whole peace thing everybody's raving about. It's funny, we rally and protest for peace, yet the very people rallying for that cause contribute to society's barriers.

Maybe they do not identify and do not want to be identified with a minority of extremists who use the pretext of religion to carry out their own aims. If you look at the actions of Timothy Mcveigh, the KKK did not want to apologise for his actions as they said that they should no apologise for every action commited by a white person and in doing so they would have always have been identified with a particular atrocity.

Quite right. Appeasement and excusing seem to be features of this particular phenomenon. I don't understand it, but I don't have a valid suggestion because I'm an infidel dog.

When western christian countries can illegally go to war on Muslim countries for oil wealth and drugs, can anything be done about it?Do these people resign? has it stopped?

Terrorism has nothing to do with Islam. If Christians think that Muslims associate it with our faith it's not as fickle as your own. When you can't take your own priests abusing children in churches seriously, which has been going on for so many years, your question sounds pathetic.

Condemn the violence without reservations.
The oldest religions do not need violence to spread the word.
