I'm a dentist.

DO NOT TIP YOUR DENTIST! However, we do appreciate a little box of donuts for the staff every now and then...

BUT SERIOUSLY. I have seen patients tipping staff members after they were in for a particularly long visit and the assistant paid special attention to their needs. Yes, the assistant IS getting paid to do her job, but she can do some little things that matter a lot like keeping a fresh tissue in the patient's hand, ~gently~ blotting any bits of water spray from the face and neck, asking, "Are you doing okay?" or, "Are you feeling that?" or, "Do you need a bathroom break?" when the dentist is getting too absorbed in the procedure to watch the eyes, giving a little rub on the shoulder, offering a hand to squeeze, not poking the patient in the cheek or gums with the suction tip, and so on. These little things should always be done ANYWAY, but if the assistant keeps it up through a 2 or 3 hour visit, it makes a difference. She could just "do her job" and all would end well, but really paying attention to the patient's comfort or be the patient's advocate for 2 or 3 hours sometimes might deserve a $20 tip. I see this happen 2 or 3 times a year. It elevates the patient in my eyes, too.

Dear god, no. Any Dentist with lax enough professional ethics to accept a tip should probably be kept at least 3 zip-codes away from your mouth.

As a general rule of thumb, gratuities are intended for non-academic, non-skilled labourors (Such as waitresses, housekeeping staff and taxi drivers) or where a clearly recognised norm of tipping exists, and certainly not for people holding post-graduate degrees in non-service industries.

Cookies and Christmas Cards, on the other hand, are a nice way of saying "Thank you for not causing me a degree of pain and discomfort roughly akin to giving birth to a Buick."

Tip the dentist? I don't even agree with tipping food service people. I don't get tipped for doing my job right! Why should they?

Honey I hate to ask you this but do you tip your doctor? You have to be out of your mind to tip your dentist after the price of dental work. No you do not tip your dentist or doctor but please be sure to tip your waitress she works for tips.
Good Luck and God Bless
