Hi all, I've been "adopted" by my next door neighbours cat. They have two small children and often put the cat out both for its own safety and for practicalities sake. They still love her and feed her, but during the day she has started wandering over to my house for a little attention. Now I love cats so she is always welcome here - and I've been very careful *not* to feed her so she will always return home at the end of the day. She often just seems to want company and comes and lies on my desk while I work at my computer. My neighbour has no problem with this as they know where she is and are happy that she's getting attention that sometimes they don't have the time to give.

However, lately she has started to spend more and more time with me - and sometimes even curls up in the corner overnight. Again I have no problem with this, but I'm beginning to feel guilty that next door aren't seeing her very often. How can I encourage her to go home without p*ssing her off?

Just to reiterate - I don't want to push the cat away completely (my neighbours like the fact that she comes here as much as I do) - I just want to encourage her to come here less often.

But I'm beginning to realise that the "don't let her in" is the most obvious answer! (in fact I feel quite stupid for asking now!) I just can't help it when she's crying at my back door ya know?

Cats often choose their owners and this one loves you more than the people she lives with. I think the children are the problem.

My parents have had a cat now for four years which belonged to a neighbour. It never goes home anymore and they now feed it. They have an autisic child and every time he screams, she shakes and hides, even though she is three houses away.

Don't break her little heart by sending her home.

My mother had the same thing happen to her. Her neighbors had 2 cats and 4 dogs then they ended up having a human baby. Well one of their cats adopted my mom and her pitbull and ended up spending more time with them than his owner and they were all fine with it. Well the neighbor is moving this week and came over and asked her if she wanted them to leave the cat there with her. My mom is now the proud owner of a 18 year old cat. It was to much stress on the cat with the other animals and the new baby so he made up his mind where to live and it worked out great for everyone involved.

Cats choose their own homes I'm afraid and if your neighbours home is not to her liking due to screaming brats, or being turfed out "for her own good" then to be frank, she is better off with you. It sounds like hobson's choice for her. Either being mauled by brats, or shoved outside to be ignored. She has found her own solution. Sir, you now have a cat of your own :0)
There is much much more to animal ownership than loving and feeding. Don't feel at all guilty, she chose to live with you . To be honest, as a cat owner and lover (have 12 at present) your neighbour really doesn't sound like the ideal cat owner. Cats do not enjoy small children, nor do they like being shoved outside and ignored. With you, she has what she needs, company, warmth, affection and peace. Best buy yourself a couple of dishes and some cat food :0)
Whatever the neighbours say and if they get stroppy about it, do not back down. This little cat needs you if she isn't to end up wandering off for good and perhaps getting killed on the road. If your door remains closed to her, she will simply find somewhere else to live because the people who 'own' her are simply not good for her.
If you were really brave and determined, you could secretly get her microchipped in case they started keeping her indoors and punishing her. That way, it would be deemed you had legal title, and whats more, you could prove it.
