Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

I really wish I knew the answer to that because I have asthma and am having a hard time quitting too. However help is on the way. My mother had some breathing problems about three or so months ago. She was in the hospital for about a week and they gave her the patch to wear. She wore them for about a few weeks when she got out of the hospital and has never smoked again. The patch has also been successful for my daughters mother in law she hasn't smoked in about four months either and I have worn it and it worked I just ended up taking it off and smoking no willpower for me I guess. Good Luck and God Bless.

OK they say its I'mpossible but it can be done and im living proof. After 15 years or smoking 60-75 cigarettes a day, I quit cold turkey. I still got the urge to smoke after 5months but I then go for a walk or start cleaning. You need to stay away of smoking places and after just 1day you will notice all the benefits. Be strong and let us know how you going.
good luck

and my friend stay away from patches as they make you wanna smoke more.

im afraid theres no easy way around this one because of the fact its an addict habbit. the best advice is to pick a date and prepare - get rid of all ashtrays, lighters etc. when that day comes then stop the cigs. you will need alot of willpower! if you can get nicotine replacement theraphy from your doctor - comes in lots of different forms, patches, gum, inhalors, nasal sprays. these are useful cas take the urge off your cravings.
keep busy aswell to keep your mind off the cigs. snack on healthy things because you will find you will prob eat more to replace to hand to mouth action. try and stay away from places where you would usually smoke...trigger places. eg if u smoke alot while talking on the phone try and find something else to do because these will be hard times.
not every smoker sucessfully gives up first time and dont punish yourself if you relapse! it all takes time and isnt easy.
ooo also treat yourself to something. put the money you would have spent on cigs in a jar and watch the pennies pile up! then by yourself something nice. there are alot of support groups and websites out there and you can often pair up with a buddy and email support to each other
good luck - its tough!

In South Africa we do have a tablet that help you to stop smoking, provided that your mindset is right. I stopped smoking after two months while using these tablets. It works, Maybe you see your doctor, they should know about this. [ Zyban ]. I sleep, eat, smell and feel better since I stopped. My wife do not even use the asthma pump anymore. If you get through your first day, the next is the first week, and so on. It becomes a challenge. Try this it is worth it to stop.

I am happy for you for wanting to quite smoking. It is a great step towards good health. My husband used to smoke and he smoked for more that twenty years but he stopped about fifteen years ago. Smoking is addiction and when you find yourself being addicted, it isn't easy to be forced out but since you have chosen to do that, it is easy. Just go about it easily. i mean step by step. when you find yourself wanting to smoke, just pop a candy or gum in your mouth and let it get your mouth busy instead of the cigarette. My husband did it and it worked, so if you are ready to give up smoking, it will work for u too. But remember, how determined you are counts too. Good luck to you.

when you quit 12 hours later the carbonmonoxide level in your body returns to normal. Think of this your body functions on oxygen carbon monoxide in your organs causes them to die quicker thus shortens your life. Stop Smoking live longer or smoke and die sooner. It was an easy choice for me. (I smoked 21 years I stopped smoking 20 years ago.) I was smoking 2 cartons a week when I quit

By not smoking. I really don't understand how not doing something can be so hard. Just try to stay busy and keep something with you to keep in your mouth to simulate a cigarette. And go exercise or something. You just have to get over that hill, and then cigarettes will be disgusting to you. Like my momma who quit smoking. And then she could not stand the smell of it.

Take that money you would have spent on cigarettes and put it in a jar. I've saved over 1500 bucks this year. Not to mention the money saved on health care.Don't have to clean up ashes ,no burn marks in clothes, furniture,no smelly old cigarette butts.Teeth and gums have improved and no nagging cough when getting out of bed and smoking that first cig of the day.
