In the 1800s and 1900s western women across the world had similar problems as the muslim women have today.

They had virtually no rights at all, they were a servant to man.
I have met muslim girls and women in my many years of taxi driving who are living life to the full, whilst still respecting their religion, they told me that their families were horriffied at what they were doing.
but their answer to their families was.. you brought me up in a western world, sent me to a british school, so thats what i am a british person, with british ways.

It saddens me when i see them covered from head to toe with these robes, most asian girls are the prettiest girls around and should not be covered like second rate people.

In the many years of me cabbing i know that many asian girls are not putting up with these medevil practices.

I give it at least 10 more years and you will see some sort of womens rights movent from muslin girls.

You only live once, make the most of it.

Unless they struggle for their freedom, no one can save them. they should form their own organization and voice out their problems. If they organize and struggle for their own freedom the world will support them. So fight for your freedom, you are equal before the law of God and nature. You have to control your right by coordinated action and your own sternous struggle

Muslim women in this county? They have the same rights as everyone else. It's more a question of culture, which is going to be very difficult to change given how defensive Muslims must feel these days.

Off-with-their-heads! is correct. Islam isn't any more restrictive a religion than Christianity or Judaism. The problem is the way the ancient texts are interpreted. People with agendas read into the text whatever they will, and discard whatever is not helpful. Like the ultra-religious Christians of America's bible-belt forget about that whole "thou shalt not kill" thing when they send another poor black man to the chair.

You can pretty much find a passage or two in any of these ancient religious texts to support or reject most issues. Homosexuality, for instance.

more fundamentally than just women's rights Islam requires a reformation and an enlightenment. The women's rights issue is only one aspect of a culture based on medieval religious principles. There are many positive aspects of Islam but it does reflect a religion still strongly tied to its early history rather than a mode of thought that has adapted to the modern world.
Many individual muslims have made this leap in some form or other but it lacks the coherence of a broadbased movement towards an adaptive rather than literal approach to itself. In the same way as there were many enlightened people pre-enlightenment in the Judeo-Christian tradition but was only when the culture as a whole moved that real progress was made.

Yes why not , Muslim women are treated like a "Possession" and are subject to Inhuman and Tyrannical Controls ,which were outlawed in Civilised Society Hundreds of Years ago , what goes on behind their "Closed Doors" beggars belief , anything from a severe beating to being Murdered -- Start Now ....

I think Muslim women in those countries where they have no rights should get together and castrate the men who treat them that way.

add on:
And after reading these other posts, I am not talking about the UK or the US. I mean the places where a woman is stoned to death for being raped, girls are not allowed schooling, their father picks their husband, their son is in charge of them if the husband dies, and they are forced to wear tents whenever they leave the house.

I often wonder why they are covered? Is it because Muslim men would get too sexually aroused? Or maybe because Muslim men have no self control and if their women were uncovered there would be a spate of rapes? They really need to get into the 20th century and get a grip of their emotions as they seem to be outraged whenever any non Muslim criticises Islam, like the Popes statement when churches were burnt all because he quoted a passage of historical text. So please all Muslims don't get so uptight about things and let your women wear what they want.

many of my Muslim friend say you are suppose to cover your hair but the face isn't compulsory and many of them tell me that what really matters is what is in your heart. some people that cover their faces are forced to by closed minded family members or husbands but some actually want to do it even though it isn't needed. i do think that more and more Muslim girls now don't dress as traditional they wear the scarf to cover their hair but the rest is normal clothes like every one else but I'm talking mainly about the young ones now like 18 years old and younger. there can be a movement, anything is possible every has different opinions and some people agree and disagree with some peoples opinions.

There is already at least one Muslim Women's organisation in the UK. If a Muslim woman is not part of one, that is her choice. She may already be part of an informal one (i.e. a social group where Muslim women just get together to chat etc). Not everthing has a political purpose and her choice of faith is usually personal and not necessarily political and therefore just having a chat rather than going on a march may be what works for her.

FYI Islam gave women more rights centuries ahead of other civilisations e.g. property rights. go visit www.alislam.org if you want to get more clued up.

To those who have spouted in response to this question that Muslims should just 'go home' i suggest that you get your facts soted out: many Muslims see this as their home and are proud to be here. they contribute to society around them economically (taxes, employing others in their businesses etc), socially (looking after their neighbours, being good to their friends, helping homeless, poor and otherwise ostracised people) and the list goes on. you seem too busy hating and abusing others to even bother to do a fraction of that. look at yourself before you judge others with your own abysmal standards. that suggestion is not addressed to British people (as I am one myself) but to idiot people.

Right. the thing that most people don't udnerstand is that the girls/woman who actually suffer of their religion, by, for exemple, not being allowed out, or ordered to wear thick clothing and veils, or by being forbiddne to go to such places as cinemas, theaters, schools etc, well, Islam does not actually FORBID or ORDER any of these things. This religion is, when you delve a bit deeper into it, extraordinarily simple and inexigent. I have muslim friends who go to cinema, who enjoy concerts and theater, who spend their lives outside with other friends of enjoying life, as you said, dressed in normal scarves that only hide their hair and neck and normal clothes any decent non-muslim person would wear, like jeans, long skirts etc. Thsoe friends of mine go to colleges and universities, they have many non-muslim friends and their parents are totally okay with it.
The people who actually give Islam such a bad image are those who actually forbid their daughters or wives to go out, or force them to wear veils etc--but what they are doing is totally WRONG. The muslim woman DOES have rights, and in any book about the Muslim people's prphet, Mohammed, you will se that his wives were free and happy women, who socialized and, msot improtantly, who's voice were HEARD.
So if muslim women have so few rights nowadays, it's because of their male relatives/husbands who actually do the wrong thing by making them do such things.
Muslim women, in my opinion, don't need to form any muslim women's right society or anything, they just need to dig into books, bring out the prooves to their parents and husbands, and if all this doesn't work, then the parents/usbands are at fault, and the woman/girl should act as she wishes without fearing sin or anything.
This is my point of view, form my researches and studies into Islam, which is a very interesting religion when you look beyong stereotypes.

Good question. But women in Europe in the 1600's had it better than some arab women now. The Islam beliefs are closer to 600 AD. You raise some valid points. I abhor Islam as a fanatical and murderous religion. And I am a firm believer in women's rights. I feel the West would support what you speak of.

i think some already exist, but in general it's an excellent idea.

i agree with an earlier posting, though. the religion isn't so bad, it's the cultures of some of the countries that's the problem. life for muslim women in istanbul is totally unrelated to life for muslim women in backward saudi arabia.
