the niqab is the full face veil, not a religious requirement I'm told but more a traditional style of dress.

A fully covered Muslim woman seems to me to be saying i don't want to interact with you on any level, it aoppears to me to be an implicit rejection, I would probably never attempt to speak to a muslim woman dressed in such a get-up that I cannot even see her facial expression.

I too read the article in the N.Y.Times about the British politico objecting to the "niqab". I agree and also object to the yarmulke and the turban. God makes no sartorial imperatives.

Most of the time it is the women who made the choice. They feel they are protecting themselves and their honour. They don't have to cover themselves like that at home, unless there are men besides their immediate families are present.

But in places like Afghanistan the burka has become something culturally accepted.

It's nothing about being beneath a man! If a woman walks around naked in front of everyone, does that make her equal to a man?? I think not. I wish some ppl would just open up their eyes and minds.

And it is to prevent men from approaching them, if they wanted men to freely come up and talk to them I think they'd choose to wear a mini skirt instead.

I know several women who choose to wear it for the privacy it gives, and I have known one who wears it because her husband prefers for her to, and she likes to please her husband. Of course, some wear it because it is the cultural norm where they live, and they would be stared at and ridiculed for not wearing it. In a few places, women who do not cover their faces risk being attacked by stupid terrorists who do not know their own religion.

And yes, covering the face is a tradition, not a religious requirement. For complete hijab, the face and hands are allowed to show.

I wear one when I want to, which is hardly ever. It is not a requirement, but rather a cultural practice and a sign of modesty.
