Or they'll say "that's what I'm here for, it's my job". It just pisses me off when people say that. I want to tell them "Yeah, just because someone has a job doesn't mean that they do their f*cking job!"

What's the appropriate way to respond?

I agree with sshazzam and A B. It's their way of saying you're welcome.. Just tell them "and you're darn good at it" or something. =)

Tell them that you appreciate them being a part of the team. Some people find it hard to receive a compliment because they have grown up in an environment where they were all of their life they have been beat up, knock down and drug through the mud. It takes time and patience to break through with such people, but a break through can happen on any day. Kindness and love will score many points with such people. They need to get used to it. Someone that really irritates you today can become your best friend in the future. Always treat such people positively and make an effort to be their friend. They will respond favorably to you. Rarely do you run into a person that is genuinely wicked, who cannot be changed no matter what.

Obviously, this person has never heard or knows the meaning of team work, they are not a team player. Personally, I do not think this person will last very long, in any position. What a horrible attitude. I would just say, Thank you for your assistance. And let it go. Some people are simple minded and common sense is void. If you respond it may very well cause an argument or worse, it really is not worth the issue that may arise. You just have to come to the realization this individual is lazy and pathetic.that is their issue, do not make it yours by taking it personal. They can not be very happy with life with this attitude. There are times in life when you must be the bigger person and kill them with kindness. Good luck and God Bless

I cant believe you stated " just because someone has a job doesn't mean that they do their f*cking job" as an excuse to get pissed off at someone who DID do their job!
Seems to me that you're a intolerant person who doesn't understand humility or poise. The fact that another person actually doing their job is so annoying to you tells me you're probably a lazy procrastinator too!!

As oxymoronic (jumbo shrimp anyone) they are proud of there humbleness.Reward there humbleness with kindness and praise.

Well, they could intend it different ways. It might mean "Yeah, I don't really care, I'm just doing my job." Or it might mean, "It's my job to help you, I aim to please."

In either case, perhaps you could reply, "Well, you're very good at it, I appreciate your assistance." If they don't want to chit chat about it, don't take it personally, they probably deal with customers (in exactly your situation) all the time.

Well, they are telling you that because it is their job. They don't want to accept compliments under false pretences -- as if they were going out of their way to do something they didn't have to do for you. It's called personal integrity.

Instead of swearing at them as you want to do, just say something like, 'I know it is part of your dutys, but I just want to tell you I appreciated how well you did this for me?'

They will feel that you have paid them an honest and fair compliment that they can accept. They will respect you much more for that than if you swear at them.

Honestly people arent always trying to be rude/sarcastic when they say that. Just politely say "I appreciatie it anyway". You'll probably make them feel good and think twice before they say that next time. I used to say that automatically (and nicely) without thinking anything of it- to me it was just like saying "no problem" or "anytime".

LOL, You should'nt get pissed off (that's being a dick), they are trying to be humble, and not make a big deal out of the favor they just did for you.

Just respond with a thank you. They are trying to not let the compliment go to their head.
