Correct way is to read the numbers and or letters eg BC 547 get a transistor data book and look it up ! If you can`t read the number then throw it in the bin !!!!!Cheers Pete

Wow! it may be very efficient in case you defined the transistor. Is it a 'can' transistor? A flat %., a twin, a ??? Are there any readable numbers on it in any respect? oftentimes the Tab on a can represents the pin closest to the emitter. (no longer genuine in 39A packaged cans) oftentimes the plastic transistors are CBE if the flat area is 'down'. (EBC if the flat area is up.) extra information might beneficial help. as quickly as you % out which pins are which, an analog multimeter show you how to are making notably precise front-to-back readings, and those will outline NPN/PNP for you. yet provided that the transistor is removed from the circuit. Parallel paths can invalidate any readings you take in circuit. ultimate needs

There is no way to tell unless you can read the part number. There is no marking or physical difference between npn and pnp transistors. You have to use an ohmmeter to find out.
