I found my kitten in our backyard and adopted her. It took me a few months to actually get her, but she slowly began to trust me and eventually I was able to adopt her and keep her as an indoor kitten. She has never purred though. She never purred while she was a stray cat outside and I have never heard her purr.
She is happy at home and is playful and loves my other cat, her tail is up and she'll rub against my leg and arch her back and head butt me, but she has never purred. I've made sure to give her special attention too, but still nothing.
I was wondering if this is normal or if it could be she was traumatized at some point and that is why she doesn't purr.

I've never heard of a cat that doesn't purr. This one sure does:

He's a stray too. Turned out to be just about the coolest cat I've ever been owned by.

I was searching this same question becuase my cat has never been able to purr.
A Cats purr and contentment actually have nothing to do with each other.
There have been studies that show that the low vibrations the purr makes actually help in healing.
Cats can be found purring, not only when they are happy, but when they are seriously injured and giving birth.
So although it's not really normal for our cats not to purr.... don't take it as a sign that your cat isn't happy, because they actually have nothing to do with each other.
Im going to keep looking for an answer, if I find it I will let you know!

The exact reason a cat purrs is not yet known. it might never have learned how to, or it might still be adjusting. Ask your vet, you can probably just call them and not have to go there. Either way good luck, and give the kitty lots of love =3

She may still be adjusting to you and the new home she is in. She is also still young, so it may take time for her to grow into a purring kind of cat. Some take a while to get to that stage, they all have personalities and purring may not be in theirs. Just treat her the same as you do now and just give it time. Purring is a sign of contentment, so she may still be working on that.

Take her to the vet ASAP! This is definetly not normal, cats purr most when they are kittens but your kitten might still be adjusting to the new environment.
