Most commonly, HIV infection is spread by having sex with an infected partner. The virus can enter the body through the lining of the vagina, vulva, penis, rectum, or mouth during sex. Although initially AIDS cases occurred primarily in homosexual males in the United States, more recently the majority of new cases are in the heterosexual population.

* HIV also spreads through contact with infected blood through a transfusion of contaminated blood or blood components.

* HIV frequently spreads among injection drug users who share needles or syringes that are contaminated with blood from an infected person.

* Women can transmit HIV to their babies during pregnancy or birth.

* The virus does not spread through casual contact such as sharing of food, utensils, towels and bedding, swimming pools, telephones, or toilet seats. The virus is also unlikely to be spread by contact with saliva.

* People who already have a sexually transmitted disease, such as syphilis, genital herpes, chlamydial infection, gonorrhea, or bacterial vaginosis, are more likely to acquire HIV infection during sex with an infected partner.

HIV/AIDS
these are two different terms.
HIV is Human ImmunoDeficiency Virus.
it is a virus that causes a disease called
AIDS - Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome.
there are many causes for the transfer of HIV retrovirus from one person to another.
some of the most common are-
1) Having unprotected sex with someone that already has that virus. Chance of transfer from male to female is higher than from a female to male.
2) Transfusion of blood that is infected with HIV virus.
3) Sharing a common needle or using an infected needle.(popular among drug addicts)
4) From an infected mother to her newborn baby, though the chances are less.

as most of the people may think, hanging around or being close to a person infected with HIV or having AIDS will not transfer that infection to you.
got it.

There is one case of HIV being transmitted through kissing, happened some years ago. It was where both people had advanced oral (gum/teeth) problems and there was probably blood and/or open wounds present. If kissing was a conduit of HIV, there would be much stricter laws in our society, and those reality stars wouldn't be doing what they're doing. Still, i would call yuor local HIV/AIDS hotline and ask them - they're the experts!

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus contracted mainly via unprotected sex or sharing needles during intravenous drug use. It can stay dormant for years & then flair up & attack the immune system, causing AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
